Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, accusing them of breaching their contract by deviating from their original goal of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity.

Musk, a co-founder of the AI company, claimed that OpenAI shifted its focus towards serving Microsoft’s profit interests rather than prioritizing the betterment of humanity.

The lawsuit states that OpenAI, now effectively a subsidiary of Microsoft, is no longer open-source and is developing AGI for Microsoft’s profits, contrary to its original nonprofit mission agreed upon by Musk, Altman, and Greg Brockman in 2015.

Musk argued that with the release of GPT-4 in March 2023, OpenAI departed significantly from its mission by withholding details about the AI model’s design for commercial reasons. Additionally, Musk asserted that GPT-4, as an early form of AGI, should not fall under Microsoft’s licensing agreement with OpenAI, which only covered pre-AGI technology.

Musk further accused Altman and Brockman of leveraging Microsoft’s influence to manipulate OpenAI’s board and ensure their control over the company’s direction.
